Five in a Row

Using Five in a Row, we rowed, "Truman's Aunt Farm".  This was a cute story about a boy who sends away for ants and ends up getting aunts.

We discussed homophones like ant/aunt, pray/prey, etc.  We read 3 books from the Amelia Bedelia series as she is notorious for misunderstanding things.

Aiden and Caileigh each sent their aunt an email.

Like the aunts in the story, one day we had rice pudding for breakfast, jam sandwiches for lunch and little hot dogs for dinner.  We ate ants on a log. (celery, peanut butter and raisins)

We learned and discussed insects, and in particular, ants.  We went outside and observed several different ant farms.  We watched the ants bustling around and discussed the different jobs they had.  We did some coloring sheets on the parts of the ant and the characteristics that make an insect, 3 body parts (head, thorax and abdomen), 6 legs, antennae, etc.
We read a Magic School Bus chapter book about insects.
We watched videos on Brain Pop Jr. on classifying animals.

 We created an animal poster.  Each time we come across an animal in our readings or school material, we will draw a picture of it and add it to our board.  The board is broken up in two parts, invertebrate and vertebrate and then we have smaller categories like mammals, birds, etc.
