Science
Astronomy
Constellations/Stars-This unit was rich with information about galaxies, constellations, classification of stars (how bright/dim, hot/cold, how big/small) It touched on astrology and how this corrupts the truth and puts worship to creation, rather than the creator. We put the information into our notebooks.
We made a Constellation Planetarium box with the constellation Canis Major. The kids punched holes in the box to show the constellation shape and then we went in a dark room with a flaslight to project the constellation onto the wall.
Space Travel-
We discussed the race between the USA and the Russians for space technology. Looked at the first Astronauts and space travel. Looked at the purpose of the I.S.S.
We watched a CBC video that shows how Chris Hadfield has allowed us to take part in such a personal understanding of life on the I.S.S. It was a fascinating video.
We watched a video on storms within our galaxy. It touched on the crazy weather we have here on earth (tornadoes, hurricanes, etc) as well as crazy weather on other planets. It was really fascinating and the graphics made the footage seem so real. The kids really enjoyed this.
The Magic School Bus-Planets
Other
We have so many birds in our yard these days. We picked up some bird seed and have really been enjoying watching them out our window.
Health and Career
-Aiden and Caileigh helped me to roll loose change. We discussed the importance of getting our pennies to the bank because they have been phased out. Once the coins were rolled, we took them to the bank and had it changed into bills.
Career Development
We read The Berenstain Bears and the Chores. We discussed how nobody worked together and the mom had to do all the work. The kids argued and only thought about themselves. It wasn't until the end that the family learned to work together to make their environment a better place to be. They came to show good work habits at the end.
Goals and Decisions
Aiden-Each of the kids were given money to spend from their great-grandma. Each child bought a little something but Aiden choose to save his money. He remembers once when he spent his money quickly, and then a while later when he received more money, he realized he could have bought something better. This time he decided to save the money so he can save it towards something that he has been wanting. He said it was difficult not to spend it but he knows he will be happy in the future.
At the festival Aiden received a $50 gift certificate to the local bookstore. When he went to pick out a book, he only purchased one $8.99 item. He would like to slowly spend the certificate so he can take his time to decide which books he wants to own.
There have been opportunities lately to discuss the choice we have in our moods and behaviours. One child is struggling with moodiness and an attitude of complaining. I am reminding the individual that the way we act, is a choice. It can be hard to make this change but by doing it, everyone can benefit!
Health-Communicating effectively with others/identify positive ways to initiate and maintain healthy relationships.
We read "The Tattletale" by Lynn Downey and looked at how the two brothers behaved terribly to one another. In the end, the younger brother showed caring and loyalty to his older brother and the brothers made up and got along.
We discussed what it means to be an active listener. We looked at how effective "I" statements can be and how "you" statements don't feel good. We brainstormed ways that we can show loyalty, consideration, honesty and respect to our friends.
Recently, when we had friends come over, there were several opportunities for us to work through disagreements. Some conflicts arose because people wanted to get their own way and weren't willing to listen to other's opinions and ideas. Some conflicts arose because people handled their frustrations inappropriately eg. hitting, name calling, threatening. The parents present, were able to help the kids work through these issues as they arose so that the kids had a wonderful time together. We discussed the issues later when our friends had gone home and looked at what our own responsibilites were and how we could have done things differently.
Health-Assess their own interpersonal skills as they apply to building and maintaining positive relationships with family and friends.
We read through a list of skills such as "listening to other people, telling the truth, co-operation, self-control", and the kids graded themselves from 1-5. It was interesting to hear their thoughts and I thought they had a very honest approach to grading themselves and I agreed with the assessment. We looked at one way that the kids wanted to change and we brainstormed steps we could take to meet the goal.
-Discussion about racism. We learned about what it is and that the Bible teaches we are to love everyone regardless of race, colour, language etc.
Describe the potential harm associated with various unsafe substances.
Demonstrate ways of refusing or avoiding harmful or unknown substances.
Aiden and Caileigh and I discussed various harmful substances and how they can harm us. Things like drugs, alcohol and cigarettes can make us sick, certain cleaners and poisons can kill us or burn our skin, etc. We reviewed not taking anything from people we don't know and that a safe practice is to always ask a parent if the child can have a candy after being given by someone. We went through various scenarios and talked about what the kids could do to keep safe. We discussed plans of action for the kids for what they can do and say.
