Williams Lake River Valley

Salmon

The kids spent the day along the trails of the Williams Lake River Valley looking for spawning salmon.    Sue from Scout Island was a wonderful guide and gave the kids a lot of facts about the salmon and their habits.  The kids played games to help illustrate the growth and habits of the salmon.  

Aiden came home and filled out an animal report on the salmon.

Hat Creek Ranch

The kids spent the day at Hat Creek Ranch with a guided tour.  There were two parts.  The portion of visiting the old town and learning about the history.  There was also the portion of learning about the First Nations history and way of life.  They learned about the different shelters and got to examine them up close.  They also learned about the different foods, preparation and storage.  The kids got to ride on the stagecoach as well as hunt for arrowheads and make arrow head necklaces.  

Some things the kids learned:

Mikayla:  "We went in an old house and they were teaching us about the old house and they gave us a cookie."

"When the men went hunting, it didn't matter what they caught.  They just wanted food."

Caileigh:  "People thought that the natives cooked inside but they cooked outside in a pit."

"The natives used a moss to burn and then they put fish on the fire with a layer that would keep the water out."

"We learned that Hat Creek was a ranch in the olden days but now they should call it a hotel.  It has all the stuff of a hotel and things we might have at home.  Instead of toilets they used to go to the bathroom in a bowl."

Aiden:  "There was a pit in the ground that I thought was for hunting but I found out it was for storing things."

"We learned how the natives made their clothes and blankets and saw a stretcher that they used to stretch the fur."

"We learned about native cooking techniques.  They used volcanic rocks to cook because they trap heat.  They put the rocks under their cooking places."

"The natives covered their houses with cattails because they absorb water and get bigger and bigger.  This would help to cover all the holes.  On a hot day the cattails would shrink and let the cold air blow in."

Barkerville

The kids spent the day at Barkerville with Grandma.  They had fun joining in with all the activities that were offered and learned a lot about the history of this historic town.

Zoo

A day spent learning about a variety of different animals.
