Science/Socials

Day trip to Revelstoke

Went on a nature walk through the giant cedar boardwalk

Stopped by the Revelstoke dam.  Were disappointed that it was closed for the year but will return in the spring.


Stopped by The Last Spike.



Fire safety
* The fire alarm went off at community class and the kids got to practice evacuating the building.  It was not a drill but turned into a good learning experience.
-Reviewed our fire safety rules for the new house.  Practiced the steps.  Came up with a meeting place.
Watched Brain Pop Jr on fire
Watched Planning an escape route
Listened to a song with evacuation steps
Mikayla and Alex made a fire safety song video
Alex and Jordan made a note booking page on fire safety.
Tested our smoke alarms

Field Trip to Davison Orchards.  We went on a tour of the farm operations, went on a tractor ride to pick apples and explored the farm.





The Story of the World

Chapter 1-nomads, first farmers, fertile crescent

Visit to the Kangaroo Farm.  Seeing life cycle of the kangaroo.

Visit to Planet Honeybee.

Visit to Davison Orchards

Visit to Heritage Site to learn about communities in the past.

Touring Vernon and discovering all the business in Vernon eg. library, grocery stores, dentists, eye doctor, etc.

Touring around the okanagan.  Seeing the different landscapes, terrain and ecosystems around.

Visit to O'Keefe Ranch.
Kids learned how to do their names in Morse Code and received certificates.
 Played old fashioned games.
 Toured the farm by tractor.




Visit to Science Center.  Went through dinosaur exhibit.  Got to experience the Gyro chair that astronauts use for training.








A 2nd visit to Museum.  Exploring climbing wall, flight simulator, musical sounds, the body exhibit and Keeva Planks.




3rd Visit to the Science Centre.  Explored all the exhibits.
-Tried an experiment to see how far we could jump and then compared it to an animal of similar jumping length



4th visit to Science Center for younger kids to participate in a Hydro Electric learning camp.  Connected it to the Revelstoke Dam.  Conducted electricity using copper wire, nail and batteries.


Solar Eclipse.  
Did mini lesson through Mystery Science.  
Watched videos on Discovery Education.  
Watched video on eclipse from Brain Pop.  
Watched Sid the Science Kid on eclipses.
  Visited the Science Centre to look at the sun through a telescope.


Visit to the Pumpkin Patch.  Each child chose a pumpkin.  We came home and "gutted" them and made roasted pumpkin seeds.

Self Assessments:
Each day the kids grade themselves on a scale of 1-10 to see how diligently they worked and whether or not they deserve a diligence sticker. Diligence stickers add up to receive awards. We talk about what they did well, and what they could improve on.  My goal is to have more focus during school.

Daily visits to the dog park. Learning about various breeds of dogs.




Geocaching to explore new community in Vernon

Making cards, baking and visiting our senior friends.

Visiting our friend on their farm and seeing all the new spring life.

Each of the kids has a meal day.  They help plan, and assist with meals.

Frequent park play.
















Family Fitness-Running/biking/walking  1-2 km each morning before school.
 Has changed to after school with the cooler mornings:)

Swimming on Sundays.
