Every other week or so, Caileigh's Social Studies class will be studying food/cooking.

The girls then decided that they would create a meal for $10 as their goal but allow themselves to spend up to $18 if needed. They had to feed 7 children and 3 adults.
They had so much fun using a calculator to add up different options. They were trying to figure out a balanced meal so it was cute when they decided that they needed bread to go with their macaroni dinner so that they would have more protein:)
The final meal was Macaroni and Cheese, carrots and garlic crackers with cheese slices. The total amount came to $10.58
After we discussed what changes they could have made and they would add fruit and wouldn't buy the crackers because they were fairly expensive compared to other options.
It was a fun challenge!

Food Studies
Every other week or so, Caileigh's Social Studies class will be studying food/cooking.
*April 9
Discussed what makes a balanced meal. Played a bit of "choose your own meal plan". I gave the girls a choice of protein, starch/carbohydrates and vegetables and they pieced together a meal of their choice. The girls decided on homemade chicken nuggets, roasted potatoes, garlic carrots and corn.
They decided on vanilla cake for dessert. I was out of icing sugar for the topping so I found an icing recipe for Chocolate Sour Cream icing. They made the cake and the icing.
We also discussed Food safety and cross contamination.
The girls watched Food Safety (Discovery Education) and Food Safety (Brain Pop)
Next week they will decide on the meal they wish to make for the 23rd and create a shopping list of materials so we can be prepared.
Second class, Girls made veggie/noodle soup, fresh bread and created garlic bread and then made sugar cookies with butter cream icing.
Cooking challenge
Together with the girls, we designed a scenario based on a married couple with children. One partner worked for minimum wage and the other stayed home. Once we determined the monthly wage, we discussed what items would need to come out of that money i.e. rent, hydro, etc. We didn't add in extras like vehicle, cable and taxes. We then determined what money would be available for food and figured out how much the family would have each day. The amount came to $18. We realized that this would also be money for clothing and other expenses but for the sake of the experiment, we decided to allot it all to the food budget.
