Science

Science class through TRU.  Boys did a class on Chemistry and a class on Biology.

Chemistry: The students performed an activity that allowed them to simulate the effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide on the pH of sea-water. They performed two microscale reactions, recorded their observations, and used these observations to infer what happened when the reactions took place. The students took home a Shell Acidification Experiment, which we encouraged them to complete.

Biology: The students built a model of a cell in order to observe the process of osmosis and diffusion. The observed and investigated diffusion and osmosis using dialysis tubing. The tubing mimicked the cell membrane so that the students could test which substances could and could not cross the membrane. They could tell which molecules crossed the membrane by tracking the presence or absence of molecules on each side. They used IKI indicators and Glucose Test Strips to determine whether the molecules crossed the membrane.
