Math- Both- We created 3-D paper shapes including a cone, cube, pryamid, sphere and cylinder. The kids found items in our home that represented the shapes. We discussed the terms vertex (vertices), edge, face and base.

We worked with our pattern tiles and templates for 2D learning.

Aiden-  Subtractions drills.  Learning the multiplications tables.  Finding area in objects.  It was neat because the lesson wanted Aiden to fill a rectangle with square inch tiles.  I was then to show him that you could also find the area by going l x w.  He filled one row, looked at the object and gave me the answer.  When I asked how he did it, he simply stated that he had multiplied.  He was then able to complete the worksheet quite quickly!

Caileigh- Working with addition and subtraction.  Breaking up 2 digit numbers, eg. 36= 30+6, etc.  Reviewing time.  Working with fractions- 1/2, 1/3, 1/4.

Bible- "Do not be anxious about anything but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace that surpasses all understanding will transcend your heart and your mind." Phillipians 4:6-7
Singing and reciting!

We studied Jim Elliot. We read about his life and some of his key characteristics such as joy and patience.

Language Arts

Read aloud- Caddy Woodlawn.  The kids are really enjoying this selection.

Science We continued with our unit on Matter. We completed experiments, read books, watched videos, made observations and played games.  The kids are putting together a notebook with pictures, illustrations, experiments and narrations.
We are memorizing the statements, "Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.  Mass is the amount of matter in something."

{making floaters to test}

We learned about the difference between physical and chemical changes.  We looked at reversible and irreversible changes.

I made 5 stations around the table that had experiments that showed either a chemical or physical change.  Sometimes it showed both.  The kids documented their discovering in both a chart and a Venn diagram.  They then narrated which process they preferred to use.  Aiden chose the chart and Caileigh chose the Venn diagram.

{This pictures makes me smile.  Caileigh discovering a chemical change.}

We planted some nasturtium seeds indoors. We have planned out our garden, bought seeds and have been working to turn over the soil and prepare the garden for planting at the end of next month!

We planted some bean seeds in a clear cup to watch the process of the seed opening and beginning to grow.  We will draw our observations.

{The kids insisted I put their full initials on the cup, something we're learning about in grammar.  Mikayla's sprouted first.}

Social Studies- We completed 2 chapteres in The Story of the World. We talked about the Dynasty in China and the Dynasty of Japan.
We reviewed aboriginals in BC and their behaviors during the various seasons. I had the kids narrate to me their understanding and then they wrote it out and added illustrations.

Fine Arts Caileigh learned about the artist, Georgia O'Keefe. She created artwork based on this. (Aiden was sick)

Health and Career

The kids have been saving Sean's pop bottles.  We took the bottles into Safeway and donated the money to Easter Seals.  We have been looking at Easter Seals, what it does and how it helps kids.

We reviewed the food pyramid and talked about ways that we can make sure we get in the nutritious foods that our body needs.
