May

Reading the Jesus Storybook Bible

Math-  Aiden-working with fractions.  Figuring out how to make a whole eg"2/5 + ____ = 1
Using word problems eg. "3 children are going to share 2 granola bars.  How much does each child get?"
Working with greater than and less than eg. " 2/4 =  1/2, 1/3 > 1/8 etc.

Language Arts-  Journal writing 4x's a week.  We are working from transitioning from entirely copywork to writing some independent work.  This has been an extremely stressful situation for Aiden as he doesn't like to make mistakes.  We discussed how writers always write a rough copy and a good copy.  He is writing simple sentences until his confidence builds and he feels that he can begin to write more.  eg. "I went to the Rodeo and I got a new hat."

Social Studies-  The Story of the world, great kings and castles.  We made a lego castle.  Daily dramatic play of re-enacting our history lessons.  eg. vikings, knights, etc.

The kids made a giant map showing how to get from 108 Mile to 100 Mile.  They included markers like the golf course (where Sean golfs), Safeway and Tim Hortons (all favorite places to go)  We talked about what makes 100 Mile unique and special to us.

We went for a picnic at the Heritage site.  We talked about the difference between life now, and life then.  The kids narrated their ideas to me and illustrated it.

Science-  Watching our butterfly transform from a caterpillar to a butterfly.  An amazing transformation to watch!

We have started discussing the water cycle.  We watched The Magic School Bus episode about the water cycle as well as read The Magic School Bus book on water cycle.  We placed a bowl of water outside in the morning to note how much water evaporated by the evening.  This gave us the idea to put a container of water outside so we can measure the amount of rain in the next 30 days or so.  We also talked to Bupee Garling and Grandma from Powell River and Nanee and Bupee from Victoria to do the same.  We are going to compare their rain levels to ours to see which location got the most rain.

Working in the garden.  The kids helped with choosing the selection, planting and daily watering.  We planted onions, lettuce, carrots, peas, potatoes, zuchinni, tomatoes, basil, parsley and cucumber (we need to buy a new plant as it did not transplant well.....we learned what happened when you accidently rip off the roots)  Each child also planted flowers and have been caring for them.

We went on a field trip to a goat farm.  The kids had an amazing time!  Caileigh and Mikayla got to both milk a goat.  Aiden had disappeared to the lake to catch tadpoles, frogs and leeches so he missed his chance.  The location was beautiful and they had cows, pigs, chickens, goats, llamas, horses, and more!

The older 3 kids had fun at the rodeo, watching all the events.

Health and Career  Reading Prudence and the Millers.  Discussing what prudence means and how it relates to our lives.  Discussing topics like how to keep our bodies healthy from colds, and why sleep is so important.
