Continuing with our river study. Learning about the river bank. We read about erosion and how rivers can take substance from one area and deposit it in another. We learned the 4 layers of the earth, inner core, outer core, mantle and crust. Aiden connected the crust to being like the crust of a pie, or crust on bread-the outer layer.
Aiden did a mini-report on the Reed canary plant.
Caileigh did a mini-report on the Purple Loosestrife.
Learning about the make up of soil-inorganic material and organic material. Learning that soil is important to grow food and help grow forests.
Social Studies
Economy and Technology- We looked at media that surrounds us, TV, radio, newspapers etc. We discussed reasons that media can be helpful and ways that it can harm. Aiden thought that media was helpful because it can make us aware of problems that are going on in the world. Caileigh thought that media could be harmful because it can make us think that we need to buy things that we don't need to.
I challenged the kids to come up with a product that they wanted to sell. They had to think of ways that they could make me want to buy the product. Aiden invented a brand of honey called Aidron's. Caileigh came up with making rice cake faces using plain rice cakes, peanut butter, chocolate chips etc. Each child made a poster and then created a commercial to sell their product.
History-The Story of the World about Martin Luther and the 95 theses, and King Henry V111.
We completed a map page showing the areas of England and Germany.
We learned a little saying to help us remember his 6 wives.......
Divorced, beheaded, died,
Divorced, beheaded, survived.
Health and Career
Aiden and Caileigh love to look through their baby books and our family blog to see how much they have changed from birth, to now. They love to hear stories about when they were younger. They find humour in their past antics.
Aiden and Caileigh learned how to sort/wash/dry laundry.

Aiden and Caileigh will be participating in the Festival of the Arts again this year. They will each be playing a solo piano piece as well as a duet.
They will also be performing in the speech arts category. This week the kids had their first lesson with a speech arts coach. They learned about proper stance. They were given several poems to take home and to memorize the ones they wish to perform. Caileigh is memorizing White Horses by Winifred Howard and Aiden is memorizing A Mosquito in the Cabin by Myra Stillborn.

PE
Caileigh participated in gymnastics testing. She was required to demonstrate, for a panel of instructors, the various positions and moves that her class has learned so far this year.
Aiden decided to rebuild his technic Lego car. He then got the idea to take the motorized function out and add it to his own Lego creations. He made a car that moved, as well as a helicopter that's propellers turned. He made a drill and is hoping it can work outside in the soil once the snow melts. He would really like to make his helicopter fly. He read through some of his military aircraft books to see if he could get some ideas to how he could make it work.
