Science

Continuing with our river study...............
We looked at various animals that make their home in the river area.  Aiden and Caileigh coloured a picture and added animals to their place in the habitat, eg. river, forest, etc.
We looked at how animals have adaptations that help them survive and thrive.
Aiden did a mini-report on eagles.
Caileigh did a mini-report on beavers.
The two then compared these two animals similarities and differences and charted it on a Venn Diagram.  At some point, someone suggested "interesting" as a similiar comparison but Aiden reminded us that it was an opinion, and not a fact.
Aiden and Caileigh created a diorama of a river scene.  They really enjoyed this project!

Technology-
I asked each child to tell me what technology meant, in their own words.  We then looked at the definition of technology from a dictionary, "the practical application of science to commerce or industry"  We made a chart to show a type of technology, what it is, and how it helps people.  We looked at the different forms of technology around our home and each came up with 3 or 4 ideas.  We would also look at the invention and discuss what people did before the invention, eg.  machine-oven, keeps food warm, people of the past would have had to use fire to heat/cook food.  There was lot's of conversation about comparing our way of life, to the way of life in the past.
We played a game where I set the timer for an hour and every time we used technology, we would shout, "technology!"  It really helped show how every single thing in our homes is a form of technology.  From the simplest, eg. clothing, utensils, etc.  to the bigger more advanced technological items e.g.. phones, computer, iPod, etc.  We found it extremely difficult to go an hour without using it.
We read a biography of Alexander Graham Bell and about his various inventions, including the telephone.
We read a book about inventions.  It discussed how/why/who and what people have invented.
I challenged Aiden and Caileigh to draw or create (eg. Lego) an invention that would make their lives easier.
Caileigh drew a picture of a bed that had a fridge, TV, washroom, door to outside, etc. all in her bedroom so she would never have to leave her bed.

Aiden used Lego to make a milk grabber/whipper.

Aiden and Caileigh each wrote about a piece of technology that they think is useful or important to them.  Caileigh wrote about heaters, and Aiden wrote about Lego.
