Memory Verse

Avent/Christmas
Wrote out our 25 names for our prayer chain. We'll pray for one individual each day until Christmas.
Reading Bartholomew's Passage, our advent devotional we'll do each day for December. We started a week early to give us more flexibility as we get closer to Christmas. Discussing how we can prepare our hearts to the true meaning of Christmas. How can we show God's love this season?

Sunday School/Church involvement
Caileigh came along with me to the women's ministry night. We put together gift packages for the local women's shelter. Caileigh was a huge help and cheerfully enjoyed working along side the women.
Aiden, Caileigh and Mikayla helped to decorate the church for Christmas. They really enjoyed this activity and their sunday school classroom looks extra special now:) It became apparent that Aiden's motto would be, "more is more".
Learning songs and memory verse for the Christmas dinner at church.
I gave each family a card with information about a particular country and it's needs. I challenged the kids to pray for that country each day during the week.
Operation Christmas Shoe Box. Each of the kids had fun going shopping and picking out items for their shoeboxes. They also included a letter and picture.
Challenging the kids to read a minimum of a scripture a day and try to think about how they can apply it to their daily lives. Praying for various needs and discovering answered prayer each week!
Learning about the importance of God's word. It is like a treasure we can open and explore. Learning how to use the Bible and how to find books/verses in it.
Learning how the bible is God's inspired gift to all people.
The Bible tells about God and reveals His plan for people. Challenging the kids to read their Bibles daily so they can grow closer to God.
Learning about the people who were inspired to write God's word. Discussing Luke. Also looking at the scribes who wrote out the Words of God. We learned about their process and how they would have to call out the words they were writing twice, stand up and announce when they were writing the word of God or Lord, and how they had to count the number of words and letters in a passage to ensure it was done correctly. Learning about Ezra.
Learning how the bible has different translations. Reading the story of The Towel of Babel.
Looking at ways the kids can give to others by bringing in food donations, luxury items for gift baskets for Christmas for the women's shelter, bringing in coins and doing extra chores at home to earn money to donate. Each week the kids bring in items for these things.
Discussing the verse "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His love endures forever". Using opportunities during the day to stop and give thanks. Trying to show appreciation for our many blessings.

Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel
-Discussed the difference between steam powered and other forms of power (diesel, gas, etc.)
-We made a pin wheel and held it up to a steaming kettle to watch it turn powered by steam.
-We discussed differences in city living and country living.
-We looked at different character traits of the characters.
Papa Piccolo
-learning about Venice Italy. We discussed the canals, learned facts about the grand canal and it's bridges. Learned about gondolas and gondoliers. Learned a few Italian phrases "Buon giorno".
-we painted an Italian flag
-we read a book about cats and learned some facts about them.
-we discussed adoption, and the capabilities of fathers raising children just like mothers.
-we read The Fox and the Grapes (Aesop Tale) and related it to the story.
-the kids went shopping with Sean for materials to make an Italian dinner! We had gnocchi with a creamy alfredo sauce, salad, bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil and biscotti for dessert. We all decided that we would like to be Italians!
The Rag Coat
-learned about mining. We read a book called, The Pit Pony that illustrated life for a mine worker. This story took place in the maritimes. We recalled our visit to the mines last summer.
-discussed quilting. We designed our own quilted jackets on paper using felts and pencil crayons.
-we discussed a saying on the window of a local quilt shop, "Quilters are happier people". We discussed if this was a fact or an opinion.
-we looked at different quilts at our friends house. She is a quilter and had several on the go.

-Created artwork inspired by the illustrations.
Social Studies
-Reading about famous/heroic Canadians. We read about Madeleine de Vercheres, Norman Bethune, Terry Fox, Tommy Prince and Roberta Bondar.
-We are looking at and discussing the different character traits that make them heroic and special. How are they the same? How are they different? Which character traits would we like to exhibit in our own lives?
-Aiden and Caileigh wrote a character sketch on a character of their choice. Wrote out facts known about the person, the actions of the person that leads to conclusions about their character.
-Listening to biographies on George Washington, Henry Ford, John Hancock, Louisa May Alcott, Franny Crosby, Mary Hays. (Your Story Hour audio CD)
-Read a short biography about Nelson Mandela and talked about his life, death and impact.
Discussing all the different cultures that make up our country of Canada. Discussed what makes cultures different in their foods, clothing, religious beliefs.
Discussed why the U.S.A. is sometimes referred to as a melting pot but we are referred to as a salad bowl. (we allow others to keep their individual cultures instead of losing them) We talked with my parents and Sean's parents to find out what different cultures are in our heritage.
We watched several videos from Discovery Education. One about cultural differences and similarities, one about how our culture differs from the U.S.A., and one about Canada.
We watched Anne of Green Gables and learned a bit about the east coast of Canada and an earlier time period.
We discussed a variety of examples of issues within our home and community. I challenged Aiden and Caileigh to write a letter to someone explaining the issue and what you think could be done about it. Aiden chose to write a letter to Sean and I discussing how whining is a problem in our house and what could be done.
Caileigh chose to write a letter to the municipality asking why we have to pay for recycling pick up.
*The day after Caileigh wrote her letter, there was an article in the paper about how the Cariboo is making changes and starting in the spring of 2014, recycling will be included in our taxes!!
Remembrance Day
-we learned about the different animals involved in the war such as horses, elephants, donkeys, pigeons, cats, dogs, bears. Each child chose an animal to write a paragraph about (Mikayla narrated hers).
-we did several crafts
-we sent emails to family members explaining why we celebrate remembrance day. We received an email back from Bupee Garling telling us about his dad and uncle who served in the war. He told us stories of how they risked their lives to save others. We also learned that the kid's great great grandfather received a medal of bravery. Aiden then phoned his grandparents on Sean's side to learn about several family members who served the war. These personal stories of family members really helped to make the realities of war real.
-we watched a televised remembrance ceremony from Vancouver.
-we read Flander's Fields and worked on learning the first paragraph.
Health/Career
We had a discussion about Food Safety. What is means to keep food safe and healthy. What types of things can cause food to spoil. How that can cause food poisoning.
We read the Berenstain Bears and the Bully.
We discussed what it means to be a bully and what types of behaviors a bully might exhibit. We talked about how we can all be bullies towards others at some point. We talked about the person who is being bullied and how they might feel.
We discussed the phrase, "all it takes for evil to triumph is for ordinary people to do nothing." What can we do to help? We brainstormed ways we can help someone who is being bullied, by stepping in, by getting an adult, by sticking up for the person. We talked about being safe when stepping into a situation. We looked at the scripture, "a gentle answer turns away wrath" and how this could apply to the situation.
Looking at who we can trust to support us when we need help. Within our neighborhood we identified the neighbors that we know and can go to if there was trouble. We looked at who we would go to if we were in town, eg. shop owners, store employees policemen, firemen. We tried to brainstorm different situations that we might need help from these people, eg. getting separated from mom or dad, a fire, mom getting hurt, etc.
Science
Bridges and Structures-HCOS Structures Unit Study
What are Structures?
-Reading and discussing Build it Up, Artyfacts, Structures A-Z. Did an activity from Artyfacts to show structures, Caileigh made a teepee, Aiden made an art project showing bridges. Discussed the difference between man made structures and natural structures. Looked at pictures of various structures found in nature.
-watched a video on the Tay Bridge disaster, read poetry describing the events. Created a bridge that would allow cars across.
Learned about what is stability. Did an experiment where we tested the stability of a paper towel roll. Repeated the experiment after making modifications to the paper towel roll using tissue paper, coffee beans and tape. Recorded the results.
read Bridges and completed several experiments. Tested the strength of wood sticks, tall straws and short straws to see which materials were the strongest. Made several different designs of bridges out of paper to test the strength and stability of each one.
What is a truss bridge?
watched videos on truss bridges. Created a truss bridge out of K'Nex pieces. We allowed Caileigh to do all the building because aiden had already created the different bridges before Christmas.
What is a cantilever bridge?
watched videos on what a cantilever bridge is. Created one out of K'Nex pieces. Watched a video on the Quebec bridge.
What is a suspension bridge?
created a suspension bridge using chairs, string, tape and cardboard. Tested the stability using wind and by driving toy cards over it. Watched a video on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge incident. Did some experiments to test strength by using straws and pins. The challenge was to built a cube shape using 8 straws that could hold books on top. The experiment was then to be repeated by using 8 more straws and testing the strength and stability. We looked at various pictures of bridges from around Vancouver and decided which type of bridge each one was. Caileigh wrote a summary about this day.
We discussed "Scientific Method". How do we look at a question we have, come up with a hypothesis, test it and review the results.
I posed the question, "Can you build a structure using paper, popsicle sticks and tape, that can support a book off the ground?" Aiden and Caileigh filled out a scientific method experiment report and got to work. It took several attempts to figure out the best way to stabilize the strucuture. In the end, both had success. They completed their report with the findings.
The 2nd challenge I gave them was to try the same experiment but this time using toothpicks and marshmallows. They found this to be more difficult as the marshmallows were less stable.
We talked about what we had learned about creating stable structures.
We're reading through One Small Square together and learning about all the plants and animals and science that makes up our woods. We went into the woods today with some sketch books. The kids drew pictures and we had lot's of discussions about our observations. We lay down a white towel so we can observe what items have fallen or made their way onto the towel.
We've visited the area each day this week and compared the environment.
We went into the area for a skavenger hunt. The kids had a list of items they had to find/observe.
Watching birds through our bird feeders.
We watched a webinar about polar bears. We learned differences of black, grizzly and polar bears. learned about how they have adapted to their environment. The kids narrated a few things they learned to me.
Fine Arts
Mikayla Theory- quarter, half and whole notes. Drawing notes.
Caileigh Theory-slurs, legato, ties, steps or skips, playing staccato, sightreading, 2nds, 3rds, 4th, 5th, drawing 1/2 rests, whole rests, drawing sharps.
Aiden Theory-8th notes, writing staccato, intervals (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8ve), five c's on grand staff, caballero Chords and arpeggios, , sixths, composing songs, writing endings to songs, tonic, dominant and leading tones in c.
The kids performed in the Christmas recital. They each played a song and Aiden and Caileigh also played a duet.
Listening to Hadyn and learning facts about his life. We really enjoyed learning about his Surprise Symphony and we all jumped when we heard the sudden crescendo! (Colour the Classics)

Practicing for the Christmas recital.
Mikayla is playing "We Three Kings". Caileigh is playing, "Frosty the Snowman", Aiden is playing, "Feliz Navidad" and Aiden and Caileigh are playing, "Jingle Bells" as a duet.
I taught Aiden and Caileigh to cross stitch. Aiden loved it so much he completed an entire project in one day! I had to help him very little and he learned how to follow the pattern, thread the needle, cross stitch and back stitch.
I asked the kids to write why they enjoy music and how it makes them feel. Here is Aiden's writing sample.
Aiden wrote.....
I like music because it is fun and exciting to play. It can be easy although sometimes it can be hard. Sometimes you can just see how the song might sound so you can play it like that. With the hard songs someone has to help you play it. Music can express how you feel. Sometimes you like a song so much that you can't put it down. It makes you feel incredible!
Conclusion: Without music the world would not be the same because you wouldn't be able to listen to music at night, you would not be able to relax when you are sick and without music the world would be very quiet.

I like music because it is fun, wonderful and great. Music makes me feel happy, good, wonderful and amazing. My favourite thing about music is to play songs I know.
Physical Education

We discussed which exercises caused our heart to beat quickly and make us sweat and how that benefits our body. We looked at which exercises stretched our muscles and how it made us feel more flexible.
Aiden and Caileigh are getting better at Archery as they attend their weekly classes.
Highland Dancing! I've finally got around to teaching the kids Highland Dancing, along with their neighbor friend, Emily. We will be having weekly classes. Our first class we discussed rhythm and listened to various bag pipe pieces to find the beat and count it out.....1-2-3-4, etc. They learned basic positions of the arms and feet, the difference between pointing and flexing, proper jumps, spring points, leaps, skipping, bow with proper counting to music. We stretched and warmed up our muscles as well as stretching to cool down. We watched videos of the various dances. We discussed important things to remember, posture, smile, persevere!
We've begun Famiy Fitness. Each work out is 30min and combines a warm up, work out and cool down. The second day Caileigh and I both had some sore muscles! We discussed how this means we need to do the workouts because some of our muscles were being used that hadn't been used in awhile. We try to drink plenty of water and work out at the same time each day. It isn't easy so our goal is to be diligent and persevere!
We have been learning skills such as; mobility, balance, coordination, flexibility, agility, rhythm, chasing, running and strength to name a few!

Aiden-writing assignments
-writing two paragraphs on why self control is important.
-writing two descriptive paragraphs on snow. Trying not to use the same adjective twice and using the thesaurus for ideas. Discussed the use of similes. My favourite line was, "The snow is like a white ocean."
-reading an Aesop fable, and then writing two paragraphs on what the story is about. Learning how to summarize without giving too little or too much information. Learning how to take words from the author and put them into his own words. Completed 3 of these assignments.
-Writing a step by step instructional. The instructions were to write the steps of how to complete something pretending that the person reading the paper had no idea how to do the thing being explained. Aiden wrote about how to make a cup of hot chocolate.
-Writing about a gift that Aiden could give that doesn't cost money.

Once a very long time ago, there lived a horse. Not just any horse, it could fly and it could also swim! One day something happened, her kingdom turned black. She went off to find what was the cause of the blackness and she soon comes to a river. She saw the river was black. She followed the river until she came to an ice palace. She saw an ice king that was making the river black. Suddenly the king turned and saw her. He shot ice from his fingers. Luckily she flew up just in time, He shot more but this time she spotted a river and dived in and caught and grabbed the wand and turned the river back into good and then flew home. The End

-Speech arts classes every two weeks. Learning two group poems that include Aiden, Caileigh and their friend Emily. Preparing for their recital at the end of the month, as well as a visit to recite poetry at the seniors home in December.
-The three kids recited a poem together for a recital in December. Due to a last minute change, they ended up memorizing the poem the night before! They also participated in singing and acting out the Christmas story. Caileigh was Mary and Aiden was Joseph.

Aiden and Caileigh each chose a bible character that they could learn more about and create a character sketch on. Caileigh chose Esther and Aiden chose David.
They then brainstormed their ideas and wrote two paragraphs about their chosen character. The first paragraph was to discuss the various character traits of the person and the second paragraph to write about how they could be like this person. They had to do planning, a rough copy and a good copy.

Science
In history we learned about the bridge of 33 arches in Iran. We created our own 4 arch, paper bridge. We tested it to see how stable it was. Turns out, not very. We should have used thicker paper.
Aiden continues to be passionate about Lego and spends hours a day on creating After we watched The Polar Express, he disappeared downstairs and came up an hour later with this re-creation of the train from the movie.
One day I gave Aiden several building challenges. He had create the chosen item in a certain amount of time.
In this challenge he was to build an old western water wheel in 27 minutes. This is what he built.
Social Studies

History
-Learning about the thirty years war. Made Swedish Apple cake to have our own little "St. Martin's" celebration.
-Learned about the plague in London as well as the great fire. We created a model of the streets of London using paper, and then burned it! We saw that because the buildings were so close together the city burned quickly! The kids really enjoyed doing this!
Mikayla
Bible
-Discussing how God wants us to be kind. Learning about Dorcas and all the kind things she did for others. We made flowers with the verse, "God wants me to be kind."
-Discussing how God wants us to love others. We learned about the good Samaritan. We sang songs about showing love.
We made pudding and shared it with Aiden and Caileigh at snack time.

Learning Right Start strategies and working with the abacus.
-Checking the calendar each day to see what the date and day of the week is. Singing the day of the week song "Today is Monday, Monday, Monday, Today is Monday all day long." We also sing about yesterday and tomorrow.

-Looking at time and learning how to tell time to the hour.
Social Studies
-Mikayla has started and completed My First Map Book Primary (K-Gr.2) She loves it so much she completed the book in 2 weeks!
-Read a book called, "Homes" and discussed how different places in the world, the people live in different homes. What materials are available, what is the climate like, etc.
-Looked at different views of the world e.g.. wall world map, globe.
-Memorizing 7 continents.
Using stencils, Mikayla created a map and says it is a map of our neighbourhood.
With a long piece of paper, Mikayla created a map of 100 Mile. She included items such as the library, Tim Hortons and Safeway (all the important ones:)
Identify similarities and differences among families
-we watched the movie, "Anne of Green Gables". We discussed how she was adopted into her family.
-Our good friends are in the process of adopting children. We have discussions about what it means to adopt.
-Mikayla always seems to notice family sizes when we are out and about. She will get quite excited if she spots a family with 5 kids like ours.
We read a story about the passing on of traditions through generations.
We discussed our family and what makes us the same and different from other families. Mikayla decided to make a family portrait.
Demonstrate an awareness of the concept of change
-We read Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel. We noted the differences in machinery, vehicles and other changes as the book was written some years ago. We talked about how different things were then to now.
-Mikayla loves to see pictures of herself as a baby and note all the changes
-We love to go for walks and note the changes of the seasons. Mikayla can express how each season changes and the differences in appearance.
Health/Career
Mikayla uses appropriate terminology to identify female and male parts.

-Mikayla likes to help me in the kitchen baking and preparing meals. She can help to measure, stir and pour.
-Mikayla helps to keep the play room clean

-We often have friends over and try to remember that our friends should be able to chose the activities we do and which toys they want to play with. We try to be good hosts/hostesses and look out for our friends needs.
Mikayla decided to make a No Drugs poster. She tells me the pink circle is from a healthy lung and the black circle is from someone who smoked.
We read, Franklin Gets Lost. We discussed what to do when you get separated or lost from your parents.
Science
Rabbit Presentation
-Mikayla is working through A Magic School Bus science kit on the body. We made a stethoscope using various materials and then listened for her heart beat. We did an experiment where we listened to the heart at rest, and then again after strenuous exercise. She learned that your heart beats faster, the harder you work!
-Mikayla is fascinated with the body and wants to learn more about it. We picked up some books from the library so she can begin to study this topic.
We made a model of a skeleton. She enjoyed using her book on the body to find the bones on her model. Mikayla also made a body puzzle and had fun colouring it and putting it together.
We read a book called, "How do we use materials?" We learned about different words used to describe items such as hard or soft, bendable or rigid, shiny or dull, transparent or opaque, waterproof of absorbent, float or sink, hot and cold. We went around the house and found items that fit each of the different descriptions.
We played, "float or sink". We found different items around the house and made predictions about what we thought would happen and tested to see if they floated or sank. We discussed if we were correct with our guesses.

We've been reading lot's of Phoebe Gilman books (Jillian Jiggs) We read The Balloon Tree and then created art inspired from it. We used different ways to paint eg. brush, sponge, q-tips.
We made snowmen. The kids traced circles using different sized plates. They then cut out the circles and glued them to the paper. A crumpled paper towel dipped in paint was used to create the snow.
Co-op Activities
We made bannock, made ice cream and gave our presentations on our arctic lap books.
Getting together with our co-op group to create candy bags with a scripture verse attached. We will present them to the older members of our church.
The kids participated in the Santa Clause parade. The girls were dressed up like Cindy Lou Who from the Grinch. They rode on the float and Aiden handed out candy to the kids.
