Verses

Who is God?
-Learning that God is Lord, God is Son, God is Father, God is the Holy Spirit.
We had a discussion about how we were created to give glory, praise and honour to God. Because of this, we should always be questioning if our actions honour and glorify God. We can question the TV shows we watch, the books we read, the friends we keep, etc. and make sure that it is bringing glory to God. We talked about how it is important to have discernment in this area. I have challenged the kids to come to me and discuss things that they have concerns about......perhaps a situation in a TV show, a character in a book etc.
-Learning about the disharmony that occurred in our relationships after the fall. The relationships between God and us, between us and others, etc.
-Learning about how Jesus helps reconnect the disharmony to create harmony.
Serving
The Sunday School kids raised money that we donated to a local organization that gives food to those that need it. When we dropped off the money we were able to see the facility and discuss ways that the kids can help. We should be receiving a call in the next few weeks for the kids to go help package up food.
Each child in the family put together an Operation Christmas Child box for a child their age. We went shopping and the kids picked out the items to mail.
Each child chose items to add to the mitten tree at church.
The kids helped decorate the church for Christmas.
The kids were asked to help serve the church by cleaning two weeks in a row. They helped by vacuuming, cleaning windows, emptying garbage cans, etc.
Other than chores that I ask the kids to do throughout the day, I am encouraging them to choose a chore of their own each day. This is something that they notice needs doing and they are to take initiative and complete the task.

Learning about Remembrance Day. We watched the service from Vancouver on TV. We read In Flanders Fields and worked on memorizing the beginning. Will continue to work on memorizing the rest.
Did a lesson on "peace" by reading through various scriptures and discussing how worldly peace differs from godly peace.

Interpersonal Skills/Bullying
*Emily joined us for the following activities.
-looked at a list of characteristics to be found in a good friend. Using the list, the kids created a "Wanted Poster" for a friend and listed a few characteristics that they think are important.
We discussed, "I statements" and why they are effective. Practiced using them.eg. I feel........when you..........
I read a story about two friends who have a disagreement. We went through to look at both people involved and what they could have done to prevent the disagreement. Each child went through and created an ending to the story that helped to resolve the conflict.
We looked up the word "interpersonal" in the dictionary and came up with a list of positive interpersonal skills as well as negative interpersonal skills.
The kids created several skits to show someone using positive skills, and someone else using negative skills. Created skits on bullying.
We discussed the various roles that each character played in the skit.
We discussed what bullying is and how it can be physical, verbal or social. We watched Brain Pop Jr. on Bullying, Friends and Anger. We brainstormed what can be done in various bullying situations.
We looked at a biblical model for solving conflict.
We discussed several real life situations where we have had to resolve conflict and discussed what we did well, and what we could have done better. Also discussed what not to do.
Career Development
With Aiden, Caileigh and Emily, we talked about good work habits and listed off a variety of them. We read the story in Matthew about the talents and using them instead of hiding them away. We talked about various gifts and talents God gives us and which ones might be important to pray to receive. They made a poster using some of these ideas.

Fire Safety We had a family fire drill. We reviewed safety rules such as where our meeting place is, calling
9-1-1, stop, drop and roll, etc. We went through various scenarios and practiced getting out of the house depending on where the fire was situated.
Healthy Living
Reading through Prudence and the Millers.
Topics such as:
Getting enough sleep
How to keep a body healthy during a cold (wash hands, plenty of fluid, sleep, etc.)
The importance of keeping a body clean.
We brainstormed a list of proper mealtime manners. We chose seven to work on. We created a poster and will practice our manners at mealtimes for two weeks. If the kids make improvements, we'll go to a restaurant for dinner when we go to Kamloops.
Baking together
PE
An ice rink! During the month of December the kids skated 1-2 hours daily.
We learned about Highland Games and watched videos on caber tossing. We then went outside and had fun practising our own caber tossing!
Co-op
We created fall button branches after reading a book about the changes in leaves during the fall.
Using a variety of fruits and vegetables, the kids created representational art of different items eg. moose, spider, tree, etc. and then presented their creations.
Kelly read the kids a book about Remembrance day and the poppy. She also shared a photo of a family member who was in the war. After the kids made art work of poppies using apple prints. The older kids also completed a word find of remembrance day words.
We had a tour of the fire hall. The kids learned about fire safety and got to see all the equipment. It was a very fun, informative tour!

Nature Walk at Scout Island
We visited the Adams River Salmon Spawning Festival. This is a peak year for salmon spawning with millions returning! We were able to observe the river full of bright red salmon and see salmon eggs at the bottom of the river. After returning home, the kids watched The Magic School Bus salmon life cycle video.
We visited the zoo in Aldergrove. We saw many various animals and were able to observe the lion and tiger feeding.
Social Studies
Learning about Remembrance Day. We watched the service from Vancouver on TV. We read In Flanders Fields and worked on memorizing the beginning. Will continue to work on memorizing the rest.

We did "Candy Math". We sorted the candy into colours. We created charts showing the number of each colour of candy. We created patterns.
Following Mrs. Brown's Art, we created pumpkin drawings using pastels.
November
Kelly read the kids a book about Remembrance day and the poppy. She also shared a photo of a family member who was in the war. After the kids made art work of poppies using apple prints. The older kids also completed a word find of remembrance day words.
We learned about the Inuit. The kids played a warm up game of brainstorming words that started with certain letters and stood for certain activities. Ms. Kristi read us, "The Very Last First Time." We brainstormed things found in the arctic. The kids did an experiment to see how the ice fields get a hollow space under the ice where the Inuit would search for mussels. The kids learned what an inukshuk was and created pointillism pieces using the inukshuk as inspiration.
December
We had our Christmas co-op party. We read, "Franklin's Christmas Gift". Each of the kids brought a gift for another by choosing a toy or item that they already owned to give away. The kids were thrilled to give each other their own favourite items. The kids had a cake decorating contest with girls against boys. We sang Happy Birthday to Jesus. We also completed a manger craft.
January
Learning about the function of the heart and lungs. First the kids brainstormed everything they know about the function. The kids had their bodies traced and then later attached the heart and lungs and brain onto the body. Kristi read several books to the kids about the function of the heart and lungs. Kristi also did two demonstrations to show how these functions work. Later at home we continued the discussion and talked about why it is important to take care of our hearts and lungs. We discussed what foods and activities can harm these organs, eg. eating high fat, smoking, not exercising, etc. We talked about heart attacks, what they are and how they can be prevented. (the kids have two grandparents that have had heart attacks)
The kids continued to learn about the systems in the body. They learned about how the digestive system works. They got to travel along a piece of masking tape to see how long the intestines would be out of the body. They did an experiment to see what would happen if someone swallowed while standing on their head. They completed their body cut outs.
