Jordan Term 2

Bible

Learned about different essential oils used in Bible Times and got to smell 9 of them.

-Each week Large group stories are leading the kids through the bible starting in Genesis
-Learning about creation
-Learning about a missionary.  Finding where they live on a map, finding out what they do to help others.  Sharing this with an Awana leader.

Reading Buddies with Pippa
-  Read The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spire.  Pondered Genesis 1:1.  Sang Jesus loves me.
-Shared things they had made.  Jordan made a Lego creation.  Read Family by Isabell Monk.  Discussed John 3:16.  Sang Father Abraham.
-Read The Three Snow Bears.  Shared favourite Christmas things.  Recited verse.  Sang Frosty The Snowman.

-Writing simple sentences through copywork, based on illustrations drawn by Jordan.

Daily writing practice.

Drawing illustrations to go with scenes from James and the Giant Peach.  I write their narrations.

Jordan wrote an acrostic poem.

Sinking and Floating.
-Did an experiment where Jordan put different items into water and made predictions as to whether or not the items would sink or float.
Watched Magic School bus on sinking and floating.
Watched Brain Pop Jr. on sinking and floating.  Did the quiz.  Got 5/5.

Learning about the three states of matter.
Watched Magic School Bus about water cycle.
Drew a picture on a griddle using crayons to watch the crayons change from solid, to liquid.  Alex drew a picture of Adam and Eve to show creation.

Started a rock crystal garden to see how they grow.

Worked on research project for Reading club through Pebble Go.  Jordan did his on Wolf Spiders.
Read Spinning Spiders.  Jordan shared his research project with reading club.




















Completed worksheet on labeling Living and non-living items.
Read two books on habitats.  One on grasslands, one on the savannah.  Compared the similarities and differences of each habitat.  Looked at vegetation and animals.
Coloured a worksheet showing the grasslands and four animals that live on it.


Force/Simple Machines

-Looking up definition in the dictionary

 Discussing definition and thinking about  motion.

 Reading Pebble Go information on motion.  Completing experiment on What is Motion.

 Discovery Education-How Things Move

 Activities:  experimenting with motion-creating domino paths.  Looking at the difference between the force of the push.

 Reading The Berenstain Bears Science Fair on what energy is and energy types.

 Watching Brain Pop video on  Forms of Energy,  Sources of Energy, Wind Energy, Solar Energy, Conserving Energy, and Kinetic Energy, 

 Activity-4 different experiments.  Building a marble track.  Testing gravity on items.  Making a roller car using elastics.  Testing friction on various surfaces.   
Identifying  potential energy and kinetic energy.

Watching Brain Pop Jr simple machines.
Reading Berenstain Bears Simple Machines.
Creating drawings of machines and determining which part are simple machines.

Made catapults out of popsicle sticks and marshmallows.
Created using K'nex.  Made a motorized car.


Watched Brain Pop video on rocks and minerals, slow land changes, fast land changes, soil, landforms and  fossils.

Social Studies

Working on Family Project on Scotland.  Learning facts about Scotland.

-Learned about modern transportation.  Rode the sky train in Vancouver.














Spent time in the seniors home visiting with the seniors.  Jordan gave out lot's of hugs and smiles.  He initiated a game using his fingers with a resident.  Smiles on both their faces.
Celebrated Poppa's 100th birthday!  Also spent time visiting with great aunts aged 99 (almost 100!) and 95.
































Read, "Three Names" and looked at all the ways that things were different "then" to how they are "now".  Jordan drew a picture of a horse drawn carriage to show "then" and a horseless carriage (car) to show "now".


Read, "Mike Mulligan" and looked at how things differed from "then" and "now".

Read, "Hannah's Cold Winter" and looked at "past" and "present".



















Read, "Katy and the Big Snow" and looked at all the various jobs around the community.  We enjoy watching our own "Katy" out our window after each snow fall.

Fine Arts


Beginning to prepare for piano lessons.  Practicing playing keys softly, loudly, quickly, slowly, recognizing black keys, white keys, wallboard, etc.
Attended piano recital.

Jordan started piano lessons Jan5.  He loved his class!  We originally thought the boys could split a 1/2 hour lesson but it quickly became apparent that their enthusiasm requires a full 1/2.  They quickly moved 1/2 way through the beginner theory book.  They have practiced daily and are looking forward to weekly lessons.

Creating collages with glue, feathers, leaves, etc.

PE

Bike Riding

Weekly large group Awana games.

Sledding.

Snow Shoveling.  Jordan works hard at shovelling snow!  He helps me work on two driveways each time it snows.

Snow fort making.

Weekly skating.  Jordan is progressing from simple walking motion to beginning to skate faster and more efficiently.

Weekly swimming.  Jordan can swim without a life jacket for short distances and we are practising increasing this distance each time we go.

Health and Career

Learning to wait patiently in a waiting room during 3 separate eye doctor appointments that I had to attend.

Watched Brain Pop Jr. video on hand washing and colds and flus.
Created a poster showing how to prevent illness.

Safety

Discussing road safety, house safety, earning road signs and poison symbols. Finding dangers in a picture of the kitchen and living room in a house.
fire safety.
Practiced reciting our address and dialing 9-1-1.
Practiced a fire drill through various scenarios and reviewed our meeting place.
Watched Brain Pop Jr. Fire safety, signs and road safety.  Took the easy quizzes and received 5/5.
Watched Brain Pop Jr. on rights and responsibilities.  Discussed responsibilities that Alex has.  Alex drew a picture to show one of his responsibilities.

Family

Read  Friends for Life a book about adoption
Discussed different kinds of families.  Discussed how families can look so different and yet be so much the same.  Single parent families, families with kids, families without kids, kids raised by grandparents, etc.  Discussed what it means when parents are separated.
