Oct 2-9

We received big news this week that we are moving to 100 mile! There has been much discussion about the process of moving. We have been learning about 100 mile and are looking forward to discovering it's history. It was originally a mining town in the gold rush. It boasts the largest log barn in Canada as well as beautiful lakes, farmlands and winter activities. Aiden commented that it is a good thing that he homeschools because we can even do it in the car and his teacher is coming with him!

Math: 5 lessons: determining quantity and evenness, solving problems and patterning on geoboards, number games, partitioning 5 and part-whole circles and recording tens. One night the kids couldn't sleep so they came downstairs and we played some math games. Love the flexibility!!

Science: We experimented with adding vinegar and baking soda together. Aiden then took various items out of the cupboards like salt, flour, sugar etc. and tried to make similar reactions.

Language Arts: We read Northern Alphabet and discussed the different animals that are particular to the northern regions. We are discussing writing an alphabet for Powell River. We are trying to find something unique to Powell river for each of the letters. We have thought of P for Powell lake, putters or Powell river itself, w for Willingdon beach, Wildwood or Westview. We are going to write it out next week. I think we may write one for 100 mile as well!

Reading: Raz kids. Aiden was determined to complete level A and did so but was disappointed that all his raz points disappeared when he reached the next level.
The kids and I finished reading "Little House on the Prairie". They had a gift certificate to Breakwater books and they picked up "On the Banks of Plum Creek" and "Charlotte's Web". We are still deciding which book we will start this week.

Printing: Aiden completed a book of mazes in one day. He loves these books and they help with his pen control. Daily letter and number practice.

Bible: We have started trying to learn the Lords Prayer. My goal is to have it memorized by November. We are discussing how it can be a prayer model for us.

Lifeskills: We experimented with a nutritious cookie recipe using squash, bananas, flax and whole wheat flour. We realized that we were out of eggs 1/2 way through the process so we tried using ground flax and water and it worked! Good to know for the future.
We had a "Pumpkin Pie Party". The kids baked pumpkin pie as well as apple crisp and applesauce. They chopped, mixed and measured. They made place cards for each of our family members and decorated the table. I threw in a salad and lasagne and we called it Thanksgiving dinner.

Physcial Education: Swim lessons, skating with Dad, outside play.
