This week we participated in the Lego Robotics course. It was a lot of fun for Aiden and Caileigh to create lego pieces and watch them come to life using the computer program.
Caileigh- Caileigh worked in Right Start with the geoboard looking at congruent objects. She learned about vertices and diagonals and drew pentagons and hexagons with their diagonals.
Caileigh also worked in Singapore with addition and subtraction. When faced with a problem like 9 + 7, she worked on first creating a group of 10, and then adding the remaining numbers.
She also worked with shapes
Aiden-4 digit subtraction with trading, solving problems using subtraction, solving problems using the calculator, finding perimeter using both inches and centimeters, adding and subtracting mentally.
An example of a word problem would be "Alex is saving money to buy a mother's day gift which costs $10.69. Alex already had $3.19 and earned $4.86 more. How much money does Alex need?"
We looked at multiplication and division.
We practiced the 2x's tables.
Bible
Lent devotionals. Wee Lamb stories. We just received Seeds Family Worship Cd from our friends and have already started to listen and memorize. Excellent CD!
Language Arts
Read aloud-The Box Car Children #80
Audio CD's- The Magic Tree House #1 and #2.
Science
We completed a Heritage science kit on animals. Using a variety of different activities, we looked at creation of animals, animal classifications, comparing animals based on different categories (eg. warm-blooded vs. cold blooded or hibernating vs. non-hibernating etc.), needs of animals, life cycles and how animals grow and change (looked at fish, butterflies, frogs, birds), hibernation, animal homes, food chains, comparing life cycles and how animals are important in the lives of people in BC as well as how human activity affects animals. For the latter, the kids looked at both the fishing industry as well as meat industry. We also reviewed our learning from last year when we watched a caterpillar change into a butterfly and studied its life cycle.
This science unit was designed to meet learning outcomes for K-2.
Social Studies
We read a chapter in The Story of the World about India, reviewing the main water source, Indus River.
Fine Arts
Sean was out of town Wednesday night so the older two got to stay up late and have an "art party". We had fun making several little projects.
For the project pictured, we used pencil, jiffy marker, crayons and water color pencils. They created a picture that shows vegetables both above and below the ground.
Late night Art Party!!!! I am all over that idea! And congratulations to the Lego engineers this week! How absolutely fun.
