Bible  Proverbs 16:24  "Kind words are like honey-enjoyable and healthful."  We read from The Jesus Storybook Bible and read about the missionary, Lillian Trasher.

Math-continuing one with last week's topics.

Language Arts-  The kids had their first spelling tests.  I gave them a pre-test on Monday.  I showed them how to read the word, say the letters, cover the word and then try to spell it.  We practiced all week and they had the test on Friday.  They both got 100% so we celebrated by making homemade ice cream sandwiches and watching a National Geographic movie on arctic animals.

Daily printing practice.  Continuing to put together our book on the months.

We covered abbreviations e.g.. Dr. Mr. etc.  proper nouns and initials.  We did a picture narration.

We read 2 Box Car Children books.  We discussed making predictions.  When we were 1/2 way through the book,  Aiden and Caileigh made predictions about what they thought would happen in the rest of the story.  They enjoyed putting the clues together and trying to solve the mystery before the characters.

The kids created an, "All About Me" book, as suggested in our weekly email.

Science  We started studying dirt and what it is made up of.  We examined different dirt samples from the yard.  We put together a mini book about the make up of soil.  We watched a Brain Pop Jr. video on soil.

We went on a fall walk and collected leaves and looked for signs of fall.  We learned that the leaves change color because the lack of sunlight results in less chlorophyl being produced.

Social Studies  We studied the lowlands, arctic shield, and arctic.  We added more provinces to our Canada Chart.  We read books from the library on the various provinces and discussed their flags, flowers and animals.  

We read about how putting in oil lines in the north can effect the migration patterns of the animals.  We discussed how there are often two sides to these types of situations.  There are the people who feel the oil lines are extremely important and those who feel that the needs of the animals and land are more important.  We discussed both sides and talked about what "debate" means.  We discussed how the native people rely on migration patterns for hunting.

History  We learned about early Russians.  We read about Ivan the Great and Ivan the Terrible.  We made gingerbread and decorated it as Russian children do at Christmas.  We also made fresh bread and served it with a bowl of salt.  Mikayla, the youngest daughter, as tradition states, served the bread to each of us and we dipped it in the salt.  This is how Russians often greeted their guests.

PE  Caileigh started Rhythmic Gymnastics.  She will attend weekly from now until June.  She loved it!!
