Learning about water cycles.

We did two different experiments. One demonstrated how clouds are formed and the other how the clouds fill with rain and then release.

Matter
-We learned what Matter is, “anything that takes up space and has weight.”
We read the Berenstain Book about the three types of matter.
-We talked about the different states of matter, solids, liquids, and gases. We look at water in the three different states.
We discussed that for water to turn into a solid it needed cold temperatures and for water to change from liquid to a gas it needed heat.
-We watched water boiling on the stove.
-We brainstormed the characteristics of water in the three forms and created water booklets. We also used cheerios to show how the molecules in solids, liquids and gases differ.
-We read the Change It book. We then did different experiments like cornstarch and water to see if it was a solid or a liquid. We mixed vinegar and baking soda to watch a chemical reaction. We put a balloon on the top of a pop bottle to trap the gas and watch the balloon inflate.
-We also had root beer floats to see solids, liquids and gases in one delicious snack.
Health & Career
Social Studies
-Working on Map Book
-Mikayla pieced together cut out pieces of a Canada map and glued them together. We reviewed how Canada is in North America. Canada is made up of smaller provinces and we live in B.C. Victoria is our capital city. We looked at pictures of the parliament building and are anticipating seeing it in person next week.
-Completing a map page on each continent
-We discussed what a map of our neighbourhood would look like and which places we would be sure to include.
Environments
After watching brain pop videos on climate we discussed how different homes would be in different places in the world. What they built the homes out of would depend on materials available and on the particular climate. We played, "what type of home would I need?" as I would say different climates and places in the world. This learning will be extended as we continue with The Story of the World.
Basic needs
We discussed what the basic needs are and why they are important. Food, shelter, love, etc. We talked about what happens to children in orphanages when they don't experience human contact and how God created us for relationships. Discussed why other things are wants.
Technology
We looked up the definition of technology. Mikayla said, "Oh so it's like all the things that we have that people created from ideas in their head." We went around the house looking at things that were technology. We brainstormed as many things as we could that are technology. We discussed how technology changes over time, eg. transportation with walking, then horse back, then horse drawn wagons, then cars, trains, planes, etc. We played "no electricity" for an hour to see how impacted our day was.
Mikayla made a poster by cutting out pictures from newspaper clippings that showed technology.
Mikayla created three pictures showing how technology changes.
Jobs in community
We played a game where we drove around 100 Mile and tried to name as many jobs and businesses as we could.
Mikayla note booked about three different community workers.
Awareness of purpose of money
Read The Berenstain Bears and the Trouble with Money.
-discussed the different uses for money. How parents money gets spent, on needs, electricity, water, vehicles, clothing etc. Very little gets spent on wants. We discussed different things Mikayla could do with her money. Save up for something, give to charity, spend half, save half, etc. Discussed the possibility and purpose of an allowance in the future.
-the kids are saving pop bottles so they can donate the money to the sunday school jar. Each sunday they bring money from home to put in the jar. The money gets used to support local charities.
Fine Arts
-Practicing for music festival
Mikayla participated in the Music Festival and received a gold star certificate for her piece, Music Box Dancer.
PE
Mikayla has been training to run. Each day she runs to the end of the road and back several times totalling a minimum of 1km. She loves the feeling that running gives her.
-Mikayla shows increasing independence on her bike and can now ride up and down the block independently.
-3-4 weekly walks to Walker Valley
