Social Studies

Working through Family/Community social studies resource kit from Heritage.
-Read a book about different families.  Discussed how families can be different from one another.  Discussed adoption and how that works within families, and between us and God.
Mikayla created a book called "All About Me".  It included things like pictures of her family, favourite colour, favourite food, favourite toy.  It also had information including her address, phone number, time she wakes up and goes to sleep.

We learned about God's plan for families.  We read a book, "It could always be worse" and discussed questions like, "How to arguments start?", "How can we tell people we are angry without hurting their feelings?" and "Why are manners important?".

We discussed change.  Mikayla drew a picture of what things were like before she learned to ride a bike, and how things changed once she could ride a bike.  We brainstormed all the ways that she has changed over the last couple of years.  We discussed the change of when we moved from Powell River to 100 Mile.

Mikayla drew a picture of compare two members of her family.  She choose to draw her Gramma (my mom) and her Nanee (Sean's mom).  She answered some questions on how they were different and the same.

Mikayla watched videos on "Families of all shapes and sizes", and "Neighbourhoods; Discovering where we Live" from Discovery Education.

Mikayla watched a video on needs/wants from Brain Pop Jr.

Learning about different jobs that make up the community.
Looking through different cards showing pictures of community workers and discussing their jobs and tools they need to do their work.
Reading books called, "Postal Workers" by Paulette Bourgeois, "In my Neighbourhood Police Officers" by Paulette Bourgeois, "In My Neighborhood Fire Fighters", by Paulette Bourgeois, "Where Does the Garbage Go? by Paul Showers.
Watched videos on Discovery Education about community workers.
Mikayla drew a picture of four different community workers, fireman, postal worker, police man and garbage man.
I took Mikayla to the small local post office and they allowed her to go behind the counter and see the different areas where they sort mail.  She was able to have a few questions answered and have her picture taken for her alphabet book!

We took cardboard boxes out of the recycling and created a town out of them!  The kids had a lot of fun making and playing with our own little community.

Science

-God Made Plants-discusses uses of plants, importance and parts.
-God made animals -discussed migration and hibernation.

Our current read-aloud is "The Wheel on the School".  We decided to explore the topic of storks a little further.  Mikayla made two posters about storks.  One showed the types of food they eat.  The other poster had a flag of Holland, some interesting facts and an acrostic poem that the two of us wrote together.

-Mikayla wanted to learn about giraffes so we watched videos on Discovery Education, read some books and she completed a lap book including general information about the giraffes.

-Mikayla wanted to learn about lions so we watched videos, read some books and she coloured pictures and put together a lap book.

Learning about habitats during our family science.

Health/Career

-Mikayla helps in the kitchen one day a week with meal prep, setting the table, choosing the meals, etc.  She loves to be helpful and feels proud when she is able to serve the family.  We brainstormed ways that Mikayla helps our family and why it is so important to our family that she is a good team helper.

-Mikayla was recently sick and we were able to review important habits like hand washing, not sharing drinks, coughing into arm, etc.  We talked about ways that we can prevent our sickness from effecting others.  We had an out break of pink eye for nearly two months and Mikayla was the one child who successfully avoided getting it.

-Mikayla is good at noticing when her brothers get into things they shouldn't and she helps to keep them safe from unsafe products.  She knows to check with an adult if she is unsure if an item is safe or unsafe.

-Watching a variety of Brain Pop Jr. videos on health, healthy eating, medications, recycling, exercise, safe and unsafe substances

-Mikayla has been discussing Operation Shoe Box and asking often if we can go to the toy store to buy toys for children that need it.  She would like to give away some of her toys to help others.

-We read Bag in the Wind by Ted Kooser and discussed recycling.  We talked about how long it takes for plastic to break down in land fills and why that is unsafe for animals.  She created a poster to encourage people to "Start Recycling".  We watched Mighty Machines-Recycling.  On a recent walk, Mikayla asked if we could start picking up garbage again in our neighbourhood to help keep it clean.
