Sunday School

learning about Hudson Taylor.

We've been having discussions about "1st world issues".  We talk about things we need, or use expressions of being "starving" and get frustrated when little things go wrong.  We've been trying to realize that in perspective, these things are minor and we truly have no idea what it would be like to struggle with big issues like starvation, lack of housing, water, etc.  We're trying to be more thankful for the little things (that are big things!) in our lives.

Through reading Tirzah, we are seeing an eye witness account of the miracles and provisions from God during the great exodus from Egypt.  We are learning how God's ways are not our ways but we can trust Him to always take care of us.  We need to have faith that He is who He says He is.  We discussed how we might have felt to be fleeing from Egypt and then to think we were trapped up against the Sea.

A woman who works in Haiti each year as a nurse, came to speak with the sunday school class and teach about life in Haiti.  It was a good time for the kids to learn about the culture, what God is doing, and ask any questions they had.

Family Poetry Tea Party-taking turns reading poetry and practicing festival pieces.

Science

Habitats Unit Study Kit (gr.4 outcomes) -Heritage

Reading through, "Healthy Habitats", "Habitats", "Fresh Water Pond".
Watching videos on various habitats on brain pop.
Watching videos on "Animal Predators and the Balance of Nature" from Discovery Education.
Completing worksheets on "ecology", "ecology vocabulary", "The flow of energy through an ecosystem".
Discussed terms such as consumers, producers, decomposers, etc.
We compared various habitats to each other and discussed how they are different and the same.  We compared rainforest habitat to prairie.
We learned about how animals/plants of all habitats adapt to suit the environment.
We learned how all food chains start with the sun and are followed by plant life.  We played a game where we tried to make as many different food chains as we could using game cards.  We diagrammed an example of a food chain for our notebooks.

We watched videos on discovery education on producers, consumers and decomposers.  Watched a video titled "The Food Chain Mystery".
Aiden and Caileigh completed a producer, consumer and decomposer quiz.
They also completed a food chain chart by putting 6 different chains in the correct order.
We read through The Cedar Club Forest Detectives and discussed facts about a forest habitat.  We learned how all the different organisms worked together like a puzzle to keep things functioning.  Discussed a couple of symbols of Canada such as the western red cedar and the stellar jay.  We learned how first nations people used to call the western red cedar the "tree of life".  They used the bark to make clothes and baskets and used the wood to make lodges, totem poles and long canoes. (pg12)
-Read Seashore Detectives about sea habitat
-Read River Detectives about river habitat

Aiden completing a report on invasive plants and Caileigh completing a report on an endangered animal.

Social Studies

Read-Aloud-  "Understanding our Community"  Reading aloud the text and then orally answering the discussion questions.

Chapter 2-How do we get the things we need?
-food
-building materials and hardware
-feed for the farm
-map work

Chapter 3-different ways of travel

Chapter 4/5/6- people and jobs in the community and their roles/responsibilities.
-Dentists-their different responsibilities and roles.
-Doctors-different ways they can help us, the benefits of treatments and medicines
-Funeral Home
-bank workers-where does our money go, what is the function of a cheque.
-Postal workers-where mail goes, the importance of addresses, postal codes, stumps.
-firemen-the various roles they play to assist us.
-Police men-their roles and the various ways they help and assist us.
-Electricity-we discussed electrical meters.  We went outside and viewed our meter.  We then went in the house and turned on all the lights and appliances and went back outside to see if the numbers changed.  We didn't note a change so we wondered if the meter posts an average and takes longer to rise.  We have a smart meter but I think with a traditional wheel turning meter it would have been easier to note the change.
-garbagemen/recycling

Final chapter discussed ways that we have responsibilities and roles in our communities.  We can help keep our communities clean through not littering and helping recycling.  We can be kind, generous and thoughtful towards those around us.  We can shop locally and support our communities.  We can get involved in community activities and events.  We discussed how we can help contribute positively to our community as a family.  We would like to be involved in helping people through different ways throughout the year.  e.g.. donating food, picking up litter along our road, volunteering at events, etc.

We visited the Kamloops museum.  We learned about the early settlement of Kamloops and saw many artifacts and tools from the past.  We saw various stones and rocks found locally and throughout the world.  We compared their colour, size, etc.  We spent time in the children's museum playing hands on with many items.  The girls enjoyed dressing up in outfits from the past, and all the kids enjoyed playing in the replica of an old log building and making trades at the general store.  Aiden enjoyed making a log cabin from lincoln logs.  There was a display that showed the skulls from various animals and when you pressed the buttons, "carnivore", "omnivore" and "herbivore" it would highlight which animal fit under each category.

Read through, "Canada at Work, Mining", "Life in a Fishing Community", "Life in a Forestry Community" and "Life in a Farming Community".
Discussed the different ways these towns are based on which is the main industry supporting it.  Discussions about rural and urban areas.
Each child created a note booking page on the industry of their choice.

PE

Aiden, Caileigh, Mikayla and their friend Emily, are training to run with me.  We've started with a minimum of 1km twice a week.   We're working on running continuously without stopping.  We have made a running goal that we hope to meet by the end of the summer.  If the kids complete it, they will earn an ice cream date.  If they can additionally run the final 1km, straight up hill, they will earn a lunch date!

(An early morning run with the two older girls, in the snow nonetheless!)

Trying to make a family goal of going swimming regularly. We don't just sit in the hot tub:)

Trampoline Time!  The kids have spent time jumping every day since I set it up again.

The snow has melted enough on our road for our daily bike rides!

Co-op

We read a book about volcanos, discussed reactions, and then erupted one.

Co-op Spring Party.

We painted flower pots and then planted seeds.  We had an indoor picnic lunch.  The kids also created rainbows and caterpillars.  Discussed signs of spring and what spring means to us.

Cooking Challenge

Friends came over to bake and cook together!  We had the preschool-K group make muffins and the older kids make enchiladas.  It was a lot of fun to work together to make some yummy food.  We hope to do this more often.

Easter

We got together with our co-op group.  We had an easter devotional, made resurrection rolls and created an easter garden.

Egg Blowing and Cross Making

In Sunday School the kids have been making these crosses to hand out at church.  We put together 60!  Today the kids helped put the final sprinkle touches on.
