Discussed why invasive plants are a danger to our local environment and what we can do about it. Mikayla has chosen the giant hogweed to do a report on an invasive plant.

We did an experiment to see what would happen if we put gummy bears into different liquids. We made guesses of what we thought would happen. Completed the experiment to see what did happen. We then made some further guesses to see what would happen if we left the gummy bears to dry out for several days. We discussed all the findings. Mikayla wrote out her experiment.

Mikayla created a poster on different uses of money.

Decisions
Mikayla and I discussed various problems and how solutions can be made.
In school work, Mikayla often wastes time instead of getting her school work done. We discussed how this relates to good work habits and why it is important. We brainstormed solutions to this problem, some reasonable, and others not. Some suggestions she made were earning a treat for finishing school work on time (a candy) or receiving more school work when not finishing on time. As per Mikayla's suggestion, she completed her work in great time so received a mint as a treat. She was happy with this.
We discussed how decisions can be made. In a classroom setting, Mikayla pointed out that voting would be a good way. She pointed out that we do this often in our family to make decisions. Majority rules.
We discussed how we used to have a problem with food waste but now that we have our chickens, we no longer have waste.
We talked about a problem in our community. Mikayla suggested polluting. She discussed how there are cars that can run on alternate power, rather than gasoline that emits exhaust. She also discussed the garbage on the road and how people could create groups to clean it up. We remembered how we did this last spring and decided to make plans to do this again this spring. We talked about ways she can be responsible and helpful to the local environment.
Mikayla created a poster showing the problem of pollution in the 108, and then showing a solution to this problem.

Her goal was to complete her school work before lunch each day of the week and she will be able to play Game Up on Brain Pop Jr. on Friday if she meets her goal. We discussed that there are ways to talk to people that are more effective than others. Saying, "you always" or "you never" can cause someone to feel defensive, rather than gently discussing the issue.
Discussing active listening and what that is and how it improves relationships. We brainstormed other ways to be a good friend, eg. being kind, doing the things they like to do, talking and listening etc.
Mikayla enjoys visiting with an elderly couple each week. She likes to bring them "goodies" like baking or art work.
Mikayla helps me decide who could benefit from fresh baking and helps make the deliveries.
