Math Caileigh-addition practice. Working with the math balance.

Aiden-lots of subtraction practice. Word problem practice. He completed two review sheets. A review sheet consists of 3 mental addition questions (eg 86+78) 3 addition questions on paper, 3 questions regarding time, a word problem regarding money, a 4 digit addition question and then skip counting (eg. counting by 3's up to 30)

We also hit a math slump. We have decided to take off next week from math and then hopefully start back fresh.

Language Arts Valentine Card making! Write About Me.

After spending a morning making cards, the kids were talking about getting them ready to mail. This brought on discussions about letter carriers and letter writing and they decided to make mail boxes. Each child has one outside their room and they have been having so much fun writing each other special notes and placing them in their mailboxes.

We discussed the three months of spring and made a poster showing signs of spring. They learned the abbreviations for the months.

Our read-aloud was Canadian Flyer Stop That Stagecoach by Frieda Wishinksy

On Monday and Friday, I gave the kids the outline to an acrostic poem and had them complete the poem independently.

Science Continuing work on our lap books. Watched a documentary on dolphins.

Made bird feeders and went for a walk looking for birds. We spotted a few and looked at them through our binoculars. Watched a show on peregrine falcons. Completed a reading comprehension exercise on animals and camouflage. They drew a picture and hid camouflaged animals within the picture for me to try and spot.

Fine Arts

Following a new art program, we worked through two art projects.

We learned about Wassily Kandinksy, the first famous abstract artist and the kids tried their hand at creating their own "Kandinsky Circles." We used pastels.

We discussed rotational symmetry and the kids, using glue, created snowflakes. We went over the glue with sprinkles. It was good practice in using appropriate amounts of glue.

We have signed both kids up to participate in the 100 Mile Festival of the Arts. Both children will be playing one song on the piano. The event takes place at the end of April so it gives the kids plenty of time to practice and memorize their pieces.

Health and Career Aiden has been reading the nutritional labels on foods. He is taking note of the amount of sugars present.

The older three worked together following a recipe to make Berry Trifle. Aiden and Caileigh got to try using an electric hand mixer for the first time.
